Take deposits
Let buyers secure their place with a deposit now and pay the balance by a date you choose. Useful for higher-priced events such as retreats, courses or trips.
Turn on deposits
- Open your event, choose Edit event, and go to Ticketing.
- Open Deposits (optional) and choose + Add deposit option.
- Set the Deposit per place (the amount for each ticket) and Balance due by.
- Check the summary underneath, which shows what each ticket type costs now and later.
- Add Booking terms saying whether the deposit is refundable. You're reminded if there aren't any.
- Save your changes.
Deposits are for higher-priced events. Every ticket must cost £100 (or €100) or more, and the deposit must be less than the cheapest ticket. The balance must be due before the event starts.
What buyers see
At checkout, buyers choose Pay in full or Pay a deposit. With a deposit, they pay that now and we email them a link to pay the balance. Their place is reserved, but their QR codes only arrive once the balance is paid. They pay the balance from the Pay balance button in their emails or on their booking page.
The deposit isn't offered once the balance due date has passed, or when the basket includes a donation. Buyers can always pay in full instead.
Chase balances
- Open the event's Sales page. Bookings with a balance due are marked. Choose Remind everyone with a balance due to email them all.
- Or open one order. Its Deposit booking card shows the deposit paid, the balance, the due date and the reminders sent. Choose Send balance reminder to email that buyer.
Reminders are only sent when you press the button, and each booking gets at most one a day. A missed due date doesn't cancel anything by itself: the balance shows as Balance overdue and the buyer can still pay.
If the balance isn't paid
- At the door: until the balance is paid, the tickets won't admit anyone. The scanner shows Balance Unpaid.
- Cancel and keep the deposit: on the order, choose Cancel booking, keep deposit and give a reason. The places go back on sale and no money moves.
- Return the deposit instead: refund the tickets on the order. See Issue a refund.
Good to know
- Each booking keeps its own terms. Changing or removing the deposit option only affects new bookings. Existing ones keep their amount and due date.
- Cancelling a fully paid booking: refund the tickets on the original order, and the balance payment on its own order (linked from the Deposit booking card).
- The balance is charged through the payment provider you have connected at the time.
See Ticketing for how deposits fit with your other ticket options.
